As you prepare for labor and delivery, one of your first decisions is choosing a doctor or midwife to care for you throughout your pregnancy, labor and delivery as well as after your newborn arrives. If you are considering an alternative birthing option, such as an in hospital water birth, you’ll want to make sure the practice you choose offers this option, too. The more you know about what to expect during delivery, the more confident you’ll be when it’s time to deliver your baby.

Midwife Care
I'm nervous about being pregnant. Is that normal?
Absolutely. Many patients tell us they're overwhelmed by what they've read online or heard from others. We start by listening, validating your concerns and helping you separate fear from fact so you can feel more confident in your care.
Will I have a say in my care?
Yes. We believe pregnancy care should be a partnership. Bring your questions, preferences and birth plan. We'll talk through your options and make decisions together.
Do certified nurse-midwives only support natural births?
No. We care for patients with all kinds of birth plans. Whether you want an unmedicated birth, pain management, a water birth or need a cesarean delivery, our goal is to help you feel informed, supported and safe.

Doula Care
Are doulas allowed at Cone Health?
Yes, we welcome any doula to attend births at our facilities. If they would like to avoid being counted as a visitor, they can go through a simple process to obtain a badge. For more information on this process, please email doulaservices@conehealth.com
What is a doula?
Doulas are specially trained birth attendants who provide educational, physical, emotional and sometimes spiritual support to birthing parents. While they do not replace the clinical role of your medical team (nurses, midwife or obstetrician), they are a valuable part of the team helping patients feel informed. Good doulas act as bridges between the patient and their caregivers, easing fears and anxiety about the process.
Why should I consider hiring a doula?
Patients with doulas are less likely to have an unplanned Cesarean delivery, less likely to use epidural anesthesia, and report higher satisfaction with the birthing experience.
